Aabdikam catering

The first annual ceremony, with the complete shraddha menu for the bhoktas and relatives — cooked in madi and served on time.

The first annual shraddha

Completing the first year

A year of rites — the karma days, the 13th day, every masikam — comes to a close with the aabdikam. It is a day of remembrance, and for many families, of quiet relief.

Relatives often gather again, so the aabdikam is usually larger than a masikam and the leaf is fuller. We cook the complete shraddha menu in madi, keep the items the purohit needs ready first, and serve the bhoktas and guests in the traditional order.

If we cooked your masikams through the year, the same cooks will be there for the aabdikam — the food will taste exactly as it has every month.

Why the date moves

The aabdikam is held on the tithi of passing, not on the calendar anniversary — so the two rarely match.

A lunar year is about eleven days shorter than the English year, so the tithi usually comes earlier. In a year with an adhika masam it can come later. Your purohit fixes the exact day — share it with us as soon as you have it.

Calendar anniversary Same English date one year later
Aabdikam Same tithi often around 10–11 days earlier

Tip: families who booked masikams with us can ask us to note the aabdikam and yearly taddinam tithis as well.

Aabdikam is the first annual shraddha, performed on the tithi of the person's passing one year later. It completes the first year of rites that began with the karma days and continued through the masikams. After the aabdikam, the family performs taddinam every year.

Aabdikam follows the Telugu lunar calendar, not the English one. A lunar year is about eleven days shorter, so the tithi usually falls earlier than the calendar date — and in a year with an adhika masam it can fall later. Your purohit will fix the exact day.

Along with the bhoktas, many families invite relatives for the aabdikam, so it is often larger than a masikam — anywhere from ten to fifty people. We cater for up to 50.

It follows the same shraddha rules, but is usually a fuller leaf with more kooralu and bhakshyalu, as it marks the completion of the year. We set the menu with you and your purohit.

Yes. Many families book their yearly taddinam with us after the aabdikam. Share the tithi and we will note it for the coming years.
